A backflow preventer/device is a mechanical instrument that is installed on the domestic or sprinkler water mains entering a property. This device is designed to keep the flow of water in the incoming direction only, thus ensuring that the city’s fresh (potable) water system does not get contaminated by properties’ water if there is ever a reversal in the direction of the water back to the city system, otherwise known as ‘backflow’ or ‘back siphonage’.

Properties are categorized by the level of hazard it poses to the city’s potable drinking water. For example: hospitals, doctors’ offices, manufacturing or any facility that uses chemicals regularly, or properties with a fire sprinkler system which may also contain a chemical mix. These properties are mandated by the city to install a backflow device. For further details please visit NYC-DEP Cross Connection Control Unit guidelines.

You have come to the right place! Email your NYC-DEP order to [email protected], and one of our specialists will review and contact the city on your behalf. We will send down one of our certified technicians to your property to examine the site to see exactly what’s needed, and what it would take to be in compliance. We will simplify this complex task for you.

In order to be in compliance with the NYC-DEP, a backflow preventer is required to be tested by a certified backflow tester within twelve months of the last testing.

We at DEP Backflow Inc. ensure that our customers stay in compliance with the NYC-DEP requirements. Once we have done a testing for you, we will send you an email or text when the time has come to do your annual test.

Our technicians are highly trained in the field. When we perform an annual test on a backflow device, if the device is not passable, our technician will examine/evaluate the device and see if a minor repair is possible or if extensive repair is necessary, like replacing parts, etc. If it can be done at the time of the test, the device is repaired and then retested free of charge. If further repairs are necessary, we will consult with the customer to schedule a date and time for the repair and we will then retest the device free of charge.

A backflow device with an RPZ opening (reduced pressure zone) could occasionally start leaking. This can be caused by multiple factors, such as: worn internal components, fluctuation in the water pressure or rough substances stuck in the device i.e. sand, pebbles, which can cause the device to leak. The expert technicians at DEP Backflow Inc. will examine your device and diagnose the cause of the leak. We will consult with you, scheduling a time and date for the necessary repairs.

Sit back and relax! We will fill out the GEN-215B report, and file it with the NYC-DEP Cross Connection Unit and will make sure to get a copy for you stating that your device has passed and your annual test report is accepted.
